Layered Sunburst Mandala Thumbnail

Traditional mandalas are often constructed around a central point, with repeated elements arranged at regular intervals so the design maintains radial symmetry. In Tibetan Buddhist mandalas, this geometric organization can represent an ordered universe, with the center serving as an important symbolic point.

This coloring page adapts that radial principle into a sunburst-like arrangement built from three distinct layers. A plain circular center is surrounded by a short ring of rounded segments, followed by a much larger ring of elongated rays that extend toward the outer edge. The repeated rays become progressively longer and create the characteristic burst effect, while the uninterrupted circular center provides a strong visual anchor. Unlike a mandala filled with numerous unrelated motifs, this design relies almost entirely on repetition and changing petal lengths.

How To Draw Layered Sunburst Mandala Step By Step

Layered Sunburst Mandala Step 1

Step 1 - Draw the Center Circles

Draw a small circle in the middle. Then, draw another slightly larger circle around it to create a neat double ring.

Layered Sunburst Mandala Step 2

Step 2 - Draw the First Layer of Petals

Draw a ring of long, rounded petals stretching outwards all the way around the double circle. Each petal should look like a smooth, curved loop.

Step 3 - Add Inner Details

Draw a small curved line inside the bottom of each petal. Make sure each curve rests right against the outer center circle.

Layered Sunburst Mandala Step 4

Step 4 - Draw the Large Outer Petals

Draw a new layer of much longer, rounded petals peeking out from behind the first set. Space them evenly to make a larger ring.

Layered Sunburst Mandala Step 5

Step 5 - Add Details to the Outer Petals

Draw a long, thin loop inside each of the new large outer petals. These lines should follow the shape of the petals.

Layered Sunburst Mandala Step 6

Step 6 - Draw the Background Petals

Draw small curved arches between the tips of the large outer petals. These will look like a final layer of background petals.

Step 7 - Finish Sunburst Mandala Drawing

Go over all of your lines one last time to make sure they are bold, smooth, and clean. Your beautiful mandala is now complete!

Drawing & Coloring Tip

The three concentric sections make it easy to create a controlled color progression from the center outward. Start with the narrow rounded elements immediately surrounding the central circle, then use a related but slightly different shade for the long outer rays. Because the rays are evenly repeated around the circle, repeating a color sequence every few sections will create balance without requiring every ray to match. For a stronger sunburst effect, use darker tones near the center and gradually move toward brighter colors at the outer edge. You can reverse this approach if you want the center to appear illuminated.

A natural sun-inspired palette can combine golden yellow, amber, and warm orange. For a softer interpretation, use cream, peach, and coral, while deep red, burnt orange, and gold create a warmer sunset effect. A cooler version can use pale yellow with turquoise and sky blue for contrast, although keeping the center lighter will preserve the radiating appearance.

The long outer rays are narrow enough that a sharp colored pencil is useful for staying within their individual outlines. Smooth paper will make it easier to apply even pressure along each ray and create consistent gradients. For the central circle, a single flat color or subtle radial shading works well because its uninterrupted surface provides a visual pause between the two detailed rings.
